Gluten Free Tuesday: Vegan Carrot Salad Recipes

My dad enjoyed carrot raisin salad. I remember watching Mom preparing her not quite vegan Carrot Salad Recipe: peeling the carrots by hand at the sink; plumping the raisins and draining them; adding in the salad dressing and stirring it all together. Besides snacking on raw carrots and a box of raisins, one of my favorite things as a child was playing waitress and serving his bowl of orange sunshine to him at his orange recliner. Not only was it the 70s, he probably had gotten a good deal on orange Naugahyde. As I was mulling about what recipes you might enjoy today, that memory of Dad came up, thus our menu du jour is Gluten Free Vegan Carrot Salad Recipes.

Carrot Nutrition Facts
According to the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, “there are about 6 to 8 medium carrots in 1 pound. One medium carrot is about ½ cup of chopped carrots. For a 2,000-calorie diet, the daily recommendation is about 2 ½ cups of vegetables. ½ cup of carrots provides more than one day’s worth of vitamin A.” The National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that “vitamin A is involved in immune function, vision, reproduction and cellular communication. Vitamin A also plays a critical role in the normal formation and maintenance of the heart, lungs, kidneys and other organs.” So there you have it. Our bodies heart carrots. Bon appetit!

Dairy Free Vegan Bread Recipes

Indulge your lust for cheesy biscuits and cream cheese on pumpkin bread with these dairy free vegan bread recipes. The recipes in this post reveal mystery binders, dairy substitutes and flavor exponentiators that you would never guess if you tried. And kids will love helping with the Farmhouse Seed Bread. So settle in with a cup of coffee or tea and read on.

Let’s begin with savory breads. Don’t you just LOVE a good crispbread, aka cracker, especially a whole grain, for spreads and dips? Gluten Free Vegan Girl’s Whole Grain Crispbread is great to keep on hand for lunch boxes, snacks and appetizers. Play with herb and vegetable add-ins.

From Ali and Tom at the Whole Life Nutrition Kitchen comes Farmhouse Seed Bread, a megahit with their readers. The comments feature an abundance of substitution trials and results. My favorites are for that Honey Wheat flavor and shaping into bagels, bread bowls and pitas. This is a perfect recipe for kid chefs to learn how to knead.

Shirley Braden at Gluten Free Easily did a little leftover experiment and came up with this brilliant dairy free vegan bread recipe for Brazilian Un-Cheese Rolls/Biscuits. You will not believe her secret ingredient for the cheesy flavor in these low carb, three-inch-wide, easy drop biscuits. The secret ingredient is also the flavor variable, with reader recipes in the comments.

Let’s start off the sweet dairy free vegan bread recipes with Blueberry Banana Pancakes, from Jeanine and Jack at Love and Lemons. I’m a big pancake fan with a weakness for blueberries and bananas. Jeanine discovered that bananas have magic in them beyond their renowned nutritional value. They can actually make pancakes practically levitate. My favorite tip in the comments is not to make your batter the night before.

I saved the superstar for last: Allyson Kramer’s Cinnamon Swirl Pumpkin Bread. You won’t want pumpkin bread any other way once you try this dairy free vegan bread recipe. Be sure to make extra batches upfront, so your family will get a chance at it. The best comments are those on cutting sugar and adding apples. Store bought pumpkin rolls can’t hold a candle to this!

Gluten Free Vegan Bread Recipes

Going gluten free can wreak havoc with your carb addiction, but these Gluten Free Vegan Bread Recipes will put you back in the saddle in no time. The key is in discovering the wide world of alternate flours and xanthan gum. This revelation will open the door to incredible flavors, textures and kid fun, too.

A big concern is sandwich and side breads for lunch and dinner. Garlic, pumpernickel and rye quickly come to mind. Karina, the Gluten Free Goddess, feels the same way and developed a delicious Ryeless Rye Bread using her Breadman. Imagine, a gluten free cycle on a bread machine, right where you need it. She also includes regular oven instructions, until your bread machine comes in.

For pumpernickel, Responsible Eating And Living/REAL offers a gluten free vegan bread recipe using a home blend of flours, including brown rice, garbanzo and tapioca flours. Megan, the Gluten Free Vegan’s Italian Garlic Breadsticks go well with soup, salad, pasta and all things Italian. I love her readers’ comments and vote for adding olive oil to the plastic bag before adding the dough and snipping a smaller hole. Kid chefs can pipe it onto the sheet and add the garlic and parsley.

Your family needs a healthy breakfast that leaves them full, smiling and on schedule. Keep a big batch of sweet and hearty Buckwheat Banana Nut Muffins from the Detoxinista in the fridge for convenient breakfasts on the go and handy after school snacks. Scroll down the comments at Detoxinista for tips on coconut oil, pre-ground versus home-ground buckwheat groats and add-in variations and results. When it comes to gluten free vegan bread recipes, you can learn a lot from the comments section.

Chocolate cupcakes are a must, for desserts, special occasions, tailgating, holidays, lunch boxes, you name it. And what are cupcakes without a good buttercream frosting and plenty of chocolate? Hollie, Annie and Chelsea, the three sisters at Natural Sweet Recipes, bring it all together for you.

When switching to gluten free vegan bread recipes, which cupcake flavors do you prefer? Which savory breads are your flavor faves?

Meatless Monday: Vegan Soup Recipes

Even with Spring well on its way here in Zone 8B, a piping hot bowl of soup still hits the spot on a chilly day. The garlic and onions I just pressed into the soil are already marching around my raised beds with long, tall greens, but won’t be ready for these soups for several more weeks. Also, my seed potatoes have not yet leafed, nor have I started my bean and tomato seeds in the greenhouse. But I’m more than in the mood for these hearty Meatless Monday vegan soup recipes.

Sugar Free Vegan Soup Recipes

“Only the pure in heart can make a good soup,” said Beethoven. Whether you’re pure of heart, naughty but nice or what teachers politely call a rascal, there are times in life when you just need some good sugar free vegan soup recipes. Be it weather, a rough day, medical issues or simply a desire, soup has been a global go-to cure for centuries.

This course of a thousand flavors can be your best friend when you’re trying to drop a few extra pounds. According to Eating Well, two recent studies have shown that diners who start with soup tend to conserve calories, thanks to the water content.
The great comedian Milton Berle liked to joke about his wife, “She loves to make soup--especially cream of yesterday. “ Contrary to Mrs. Berle, you’ll want to include these sugar free vegan soups in your menu every day. With outstanding nutritional content, soup-erior flavor profiles and simple preparation, they’re just that good.

Vegan Kosher for Passover Soup Recipes for Seder

The green lifestyle and health concerns have growing numbers of Jews going vegan and/or entertaining more vegan guests at their tables. Interesting culinary challenges are cropping up as a direct result. I surfed the blogosphere for these vegan Kosher for Passover soup recipes to help out my Hebrew readers. I’m spiritual, non-religious and not of Jewish heritage. However, I’m striving to learn more about the Kosher diet in terms of veganism. If I do my job right, my readers can then relax and enjoy the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical pleasures of cooking, serving and eating according to their Kosher vegan beliefs.

A note to my non-Hebrew readers: P is an abbreviation representing “Kosher for Passover.” Kosher is a set of guidelines composed by rabbis thousands of years ago for spiritual and physical purposes. While people of Jewish heritage and faith don’t always keep Kosher throughout the year, many adhere to stricter guidelines during Passover, which occurs more than once a year. There’s also the increased complexity of living by a calendar loaded with cycles of holidays, feasts and fasts that differs significantly from the largely Christian calendar primarily used in developed Western countries.

General Kosher and Passover rules also vary between Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews, who have different geological lineages and traditions. So keeping Kosher isn’t always the easiest lifestyle, but it’s worth learning a little about if you have Kosher friends or family. For them, it’s rewarding to continue traditions that have been handed down for a remarkable period of time, and some of the rules even make good health sense.

Kosher for Passover soup recipes cannot contain flour. Many vegan and vegetarian allegedly Kosher Passover soup recipes on the web contain these very things. Thus, Kosher home cooks and chefs must read potentially Passover web recipes with caution. The recipes below are free of flour, peanut butter and soy.

Most Ashkenazis are not allowed peanut butter or soy, due to their legume status. However, some Ashkenazi rabbis have accepted the consumption of tofu, which can be used in place of eggs in baked matzo balls. This is necessary, because the egg replacer commonly used by vegans and vegetarians to hold matzo balls together is not Kosher for Passover.

So browse below for your soup course and rest assured you’ll be good to go as you serve these vegan Kosher for Passover soup recipes to your family and friends.

Gluten Free Soup Recipes

Abraham Maslow quipped, “A first-rate soup is more creative than a second-rate painting.” This collection of five gluten free soup recipes is absolutely first-rate. Start your family and guests off with a culinary masterpiece of tomato, potato, okra, black bean or celery. When you sip a cup or bowl of soup, you’re actually taking a trip around the world in a spoon. The term “soup” originally hails from Sanskrit, one of the many languages of India. In that tongue, it translates to “good nutrition."

Nutrition is exactly what you’ll get with these hearty soups. Tomatoes and potatoes both carry a whopping 60% Recommended DailyAllowance of Vitamin D. Hippocrates wasn’t kidding around when he said, “Let thy food be thy medicine.” In the ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda, garlic and onions are both recommended for heart disease and high blood pressure, among many other ailments. So invite your family and friends to join you in a bowl of soup. It’s big enough for everyone.

When winter chills your bones and cold and flu season’s got you sneezin’, dairy free soup recipes are just what the doctor ordered. I found these delicious bowls of dairy free perfection while toodling about the blogosphere. Laurie Colwin once wrote, “To feel safe and warm on a cold wet night, all you really need is soup.”  These soups will warm you right up, especially the spicy Chinese Hot and Sour Soup and Chunky Chipotle Chili. "Is chicken soup good for your health?" "Not if you're the chicken." Well, there’s no chicken in this “Chicken” Noodle Soup or any of the dairy free soups in our Recipe Index. According to SoupHoopla, all but 1% of American homes spend $5 billion a year on soup, altogether. Imagine how much you’ll save making your own at home with these savory, dairy free soup recipes.

Go for a blend of traditional and not-so-traditional dishes with these dairy and gluten free recipes for Thanksgiving. These sweet and savory delicacies comprise a full meatless menu: drinks, bread, soup, salad, starch, vegetable, meat substitute and dessert. Holiday flavors, such as carrot, apple, cranberry and orange, set a festive tone, while sweet potato and faux turkey take pride of place.

Gluten Free Tuesday: Purple Heart Menu

In honor of our fallen and returning veterans, many with injuries, and the anniversary of the Purple Heart, I've gathered a menu of gluten free recipes along a purple theme. Enjoy sharing the history with your family and friends, along with the yummy goodies.

On this day 230 years ago, the Badge of Military Merit was conceived by then-General George Washington, future founding father and first President of the United States of America. Only three Revolutionary War veterans received the simple cloth commendation. It then languished for 150 years until it was revived, renamed and a redesign commissioned by General Douglas MacArthur, who received the first Purple Heart. Elizabeth Will, an Army specialist in military awards, created the redesign in accordance with orders and archives.

World War II saw civilians being awarded. Posthumous awards were approved in 1962. An Executive Order dated 1984 permitted peacekeepers injured since the Spring of 1973 to be awarded. In 1985 it received a promotion which caused it to outrank the Meritorious Service Medals, up from Good Conduct. It was then approved for those wounded by friendly fire. 1998 saw the disqualification of American civilians wounded while attached to the military.

Due to the government's surplus of World War II-issue Purple Hearts, which was not fully utilized despite the Korean and Vietnam Wars, members of our military sustaining qualifying injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan receive these vintage awards without delay.

For more information, click here. Now, how about some purple gluten free recipes?
